Washington County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 33,941. Its county seat is Machias6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 8,430 km² (3,255 mi²). 6,652 km² (2,568 mi²) of it is land and 1,778 km² (686 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,941 people, 14,118 households, and 9,303 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (13/mi²). There are 21,919 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.48% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 4.43% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 0.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,118 households out of which 28.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.10% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,869, and the median income for a family is $31,657. Males have a median income of $28,347 versus $20,074 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,119. 19.00% of the population and 14.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.40% are under the age of 18 and 19.20% are 65 or older.
