Whiting is a town located in Washington County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 430.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 135.0 km² (52.1 mi²). 121.1 km² (46.8 mi²) of it is land and 13.8 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.25% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 430 people, 181 households, and 116 families residing in the town. The population density is 3.5/km² (9.2/mi²). There are 342 housing units at an average density of 2.8/km² (7.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.14% White, 0.00% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 181 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 3.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% are non-families. 28.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.87. In the town the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 29.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 110.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.1 males.
