The airport is hub to Continental Airlines and has the IATA Airport Code EWR. Newark is one of two international airports serving New York City; the other airport is JFK International Airport. Newark International Airport has service to other destinations in the United States, as well as Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Newark Liberty started out as Newark International Airport, as the first New York City area Airport. On September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93, which was on its way between Newark and San Francisco's San Francisco International Airport, crashed in Pennsylvania, due to a passenger uprising against terrorist hijackers who wanted to crash Flight 93 into the Capitol in Washington D.C.
Because of the event, Newark Airport was renamed Newark Liberty International Airport.
Newark Liberty gets mostly connecting passengers, since most of the local order and demand goes to La Guardia Airport.
Newark Liberty International Airport has three major passenger Terminals, with Terminal C being the newest and most heavily used.
