Evans, Georgia

Evans is a town located in Columbia County, Georgia and is a suburb of Augusta, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 17,727.

Geography

Evans is located at 33°30'40" North, 82°8'24" West (33.511074, -82.139908)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 25.9 km² (10.0 mi²). 25.7 km² (9.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.70% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 17,727 people, 6,319 households, and 4,973 families residing in the town. The population density is 688.6/km² (1,784.1/mi²). There are 6,632 housing units at an average density of 257.6/km² (667.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.61% White, 10.22% African American, 0.25% Native American, 2.69% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 2.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,319 households out of which 41.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.9% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.3% are non-families. 18.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $56,272, and the median income for a family is $62,227. Males have a median income of $45,620 versus $28,424 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,995. 3.7% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.7% are under the age of 18 and 8.7% are 65 or older.
