Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,563 km² (2,148 mi²). 5,362 km² (2,070 mi²) of it is land and 201 km² (78 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.61% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 19,761 people, 8,095 households, and 5,261 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 9,680 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.95% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 4.40% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,095 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.30% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.00% are non-families. 30.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.99. In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 16.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $31,491, and the median income for a family is $39,065. Males have a median income of $29,884 versus $19,329 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,763. 11.90% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.50% are under the age of 18 and 8.10% are 65 or older.
