Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,381 km² (919 mi²). 2,371 km² (916 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 126,555 people, 47,274 households, and 32,524 families residing in the county. The population density is 53/km² (138/mi²). There are 52,056 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (57/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.61% White, 6.73% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 8.35% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. 17.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 47,274 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.07. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 13.80% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 19.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 94.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $34,035, and the median income for a family is $40,859. Males have a median income of $28,964 versus $21,021 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,176. 14.50% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.60% are under the age of 18 and 9.20% are 65 or older.
