Saint Johns, Michigan

St. Johns is a city located in Clinton County, Michigan. It is the county seat of Clinton County6.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land with none of it covered by water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 7,485 people, 2,994 households, and 1,999 families residing in the city. The population density is 737.2/km² (1,909.1/mi²). There are 3,148 housing units at an average density of 310.1/km² (802.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.64% White, 0.75% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 3.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,994 households out of which 34.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 33.2% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $41,713, and the median income for a family is $52,391. Males have a median income of $39,289 versus $27,940 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,611. 6.5% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.6% are under the age of 18 and 5.1% are 65 or older.
