Pickens County, Alabama

\nPickens County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of General Andrew Pickens of South Carolina. As of 2000 the population was 20,949. Its county seat is Carrollton.

History

\nPickens County was established on December 20, 1820.

Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,305 km² (890 mi²). 2,283 km² (881 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.97% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 20,949 people, 8,086 households, and 5,789 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 9,520 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 55.95% White, 42.96% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,086 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.80% are married couples living together, 18.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.11. In the county the population is spread out with 27.30% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $26,254, and the median income for a family is $32,938. Males have a median income of $28,843 versus $20,569 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,746. 24.90% of the population and 20.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.30% are under the age of 18 and 22.30% are 65 or older.
