Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 43.1 km² (16.6 mi²). 42.8 km² (16.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water. McCandless is now incorporated as a town, rather than a township. It is part of the North Allegheny School district, along with the boroughs of Franklin Park, Bradford Woods and Marshall Township. Retail districts include the Wexford Flats along US Rt. 19, and the historic postal village of Ingomar. UPMC Passavant Hospital and La Roche College also call McCandless home.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 29,022 people, 11,159 households, and 7,922 families residing in the township. The population density is 677.5/km² (1,754.4/mi²). There are 11,697 housing units at an average density of 273.0 persons/km² (707.1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 94.58% White, 1.29% African American, 0.05% Native American, 3.19% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,159 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% are married couples living together, 6.1% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 29.0% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the township the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $62,159, and the median income for a family is $73,482. Males have a median income of $57,415 versus $33,319 for females. The per capita income for the township is $31,792. 4.0% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.2% are under the age of 18 and 9.1% are 65 or older.
