Mathias Locke

British furniture maker. An accomplished wood carver, designer and ornamentalist. Locke, in partnership with Henry Copland was one of the craftsmen who introduced the Rococo Furniture Style to England in the mid 1700's. He produced several books of furniture design between 1746 and 1769. However his contribution to one of the most famous design books of that era, Thomas Chippendale's Director is not acknowledged and seldom recognized. A collection of his original drawings is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London
