History

\nLee County was created in 1887. It was named for Robert E. Lee, general in the American Civil War.

Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,139 km² (1,212 mi²). 2,081 km² (804 mi²) of it is land and 1,057 km² (408 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 33.69% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 440,888 people, 188,599 households, and 127,681 families residing in the county. The population density is 212/km² (549/mi²). There are 245,405 housing units at an average density of 118/km² (305/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.69% White, 6.59% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.07% from other races, and 1.55% from two or more races. 9.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 188,599 households out of which 22.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.50% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.73. In the county the population is spread out with 19.60% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 24.00% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 25.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $40,319, and the median income for a family is $46,430. Males have a median income of $31,247 versus $24,380 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,542. 9.70% of the population and 6.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.20% are under the age of 18 and 5.60% are 65 or older.
