Kennebec County, Maine

Kennebec County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 117,114. Its county seat is Augusta6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,464 km² (951 mi²). 2,247 km² (868 mi²) of it is land and 217 km² (84 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.79% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 117,114 people, 47,683 households, and 31,327 families residing in the county. The population density is 52/km² (135/mi²). There are 56,364 housing units at an average density of 25/km² (65/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.45% White, 0.34% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 47,683 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.60% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.30% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,498, and the median income for a family is $43,814. Males have a median income of $32,279 versus $24,032 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,520. 11.10% of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.20% are under the age of 18 and 10.20% are 65 or older.
