John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore

John Murray Dunmore (1730 - February 25, 1809) was the British colonial governor of New York ([1770]]-1771) and Virginia (1771-1775). From 1771 to 1774, he directed a series of campaigns against the Indians known as Lord Dunmore's War. The main target of these attacks were the Shawnee, and his purpose was in strengthen Virginia's claims in the west, particularly the Ohio Valley.

The Revolution

From 1774 he was constantly clashing with the Colonial Assembly. He had to hide on a British warship when the
American Revolutionary War broke out. When he couldn't regain control of Virginia, he went back to England in July 1776. From 1787 to 1796 he was governor of the Bahamas.
