Hampi

Hampi was the historic capital of the Vijayanagara kingdom situated along the Tungabhadra river in the Southern part of India in the modern state of Karnataka. Most of the structures in this city were built in the 16th century AD. The whole city is in a ruined state due to the ravages of war.

Some important structures in this city are

• the Virupaksha, Krishna and Vittala temples, the final one having the famous stone chariot or ratha.
• Mahanavami dibba, a high platform with rich carvings used for festivities.
• Kamal Mahal or the Lotus Palace for the queens.
• Elephant stables
• Ugra Narasimha, a monolithic statue
• Pushkarani, a stepped well.

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
