Drugstore Cowboy (1989 movie)

Drugstore Cowboy was written and directed by Gus Van Sant in 1989. It is the story of two junkies Bob Hughes Matt Dillon and Dianne Kelly Lynch as they travel across the US in the early 70s, supporting their habit by robbing pharmacies. A highlight of the film is a cameo by the original junkie William S. Burroughs as Tom the Priest, who lectures Bob on the dangers of temptation. Van Sant's screenplay is based on the unpublished novel by James Fogle. The novel was published in 1990 (ISBN 038530224X) when Fogle was released from prison (drugs charges).
