Clearwater, South Carolina

Clearwater is a town located in Aiken County, South Carolina, is a suburb of North Augusta, South Carolina, and is part of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,199.


Clearwater is located at 33°30'20" North, 81°54'27" West (33.505597, -81.907585)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.1 km² (4.3 mi²). 11.1 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.47% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 4,199 people, 1,717 households, and 1,174 families residing in the town. The population density is 379.7/km² (983.8/mi²). There are 1,938 housing units at an average density of 175.2/km² (454.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 79.92% White, 16.08% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.67% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 3.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,717 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $30,693, and the median income for a family is $36,528. Males have a median income of $32,135 versus $21,020 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,902. 20.2% of the population and 13.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.4% are under the age of 18 and 17.7% are 65 or older.
