Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel, in comic books, refers to one of several fictional characters:

  1. Captain Marvel is a superhero with the powers of several Greek gods who changes from paperboy Billy Batson to his alter-ego by shouting the magic word "SHAZAM!" This hero was originally published by Fawcett Comics in the 1940s, and by DC Comics in the 1970s and later.
  2. Captain Marvel is Captain Mar-Vell of the alien race of the Kree, as published by Marvel Comics. As a superhero, he famously fought the supervillain Thanos, and is known for having been written and drawn by Jim Starlin, including his death in the graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel (1982). In the 1990s, Mar-Vell's son Genis adopted the name and appeared in adventures written by Peter David.
  3. Captain Marvel was the original name of the Marvel Comics superhero Photon, a member of The Avengers.
