Base metal

Base metals are those metals that possess relatively little value in light of their common nature. Such metals include copper, brass, bronze, and particularly lead.

One of the chief goals of alchemy was to be able to transmute base metals into precious metals such as gold or silver. The Philosopher's Stone was said to be able to do this. It is generally recognized today that such changes are possible only in a nuclear reactor.
