A. Ross Eckler

A. Ross Eckler (1901 - 1991) served as deputy director of the Census Bureau from 1949 to 1965, and its director from 1965 until 1969. He was the first career employee ever to become director of the agency. He authored The Bureau of the Census (ISBN 0275553701), and is a former president of the American Statistical Association.

His son of the same name is a noted centenarian researcher who has disproved exaggerated age claims such as those of Charlie Smith and George Fruits while authenticating others such as Delina Filkins (1815-1928).
