Zion, Illinois

Zion is a city located in Lake County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,866. The city founded in July of 1901 by Dr. John Alexander Dowie. He also started the Zion Tabernacle of the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church, which was the only church in town. It was built in the early 1900s and burned down in 1937.

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.2 km² (8.2 mi²). 21.2 km² (8.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 22,866 people, 7,552 households, and 5,558 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,076.7/km² (2,789.5/mi²). There are 8,036 housing units at an average density of 378.4/km² (980.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 58.76% White, 27.10% African American, 0.38% Native American, 1.87% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 7.80% from other races, and 4.02% from two or more races. 15.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,552 households out of which 44.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 20.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% are non-families. 21.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.96 and the average family size is 3.44. In the city the population is spread out with 33.2% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $45,723, and the median income for a family is $50,378. Males have a median income of $37,455 versus $27,563 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,730. 11.9% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.5% are under the age of 18 and 7.7% are 65 or older.
