Yomp

Yomp is British Army military slang describing a fast, long distance march carrying full kit.

The most famous yomp of recent times was during the Falklands War. After disembarking from carrier ships at San Carlos on the East Falklands, on May 21st, troops yomped with their equipment across the length of the islands, all the way to Port Stanley, which was retaken on 28th May.

Unlike most other military services of the world, the British Army does a considerable amount of training in which soldiers march great distances in poor weather conditions carrying incredible amounts of kit. Such excecises, combined with sleep-deprivation and complex descision-making, are the prime means by which British Special Forces candidates are thinned-out.
