Yelm is a city located in Thurston County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,289.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 3,289 people, 1,216 households, and 807 families residing in the city. The population density is 225.6/km² (584.4/mi²). There are 1,323 housing units at an average density of 90.7/km² (235.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.17% White, 1.79% African American, 2.22% Native American, 1.73% Asian, 1.16% Pacific Islander, 1.58% from other races, and 5.35% from two or more races. 5.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,216 households out of which 41.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% are married couples living together, 14.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.26. In the city the population is spread out with 32.0% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $39,453, and the median income for a family is $45,475. Males have a median income of $32,037 versus $24,474 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,865. 10.1% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line.
