Geography\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,048 km² (405 mi²). 1,029 km² (397 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.88% water.
Demographics\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,080 people, 10,762 households, and 7,705 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (71/mi²). There are 12,713 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.28% White, 0.53% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,762 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the county, the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.80 males.
