Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,406 km² (543 mi²). 1,367 km² (528 mi²) of it is land and 38 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.73% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 35,469 people, 12,797 households, and 9,802 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (67/mi²). There are 13,487 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.47% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,797 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.50% are married couples living together, 6.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.40% are non-families. 20.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.12. In the county the population is spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $51,394, and the median income for a family is $58,305. Males have a median income of $42,150 versus $25,251 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,956. 4.30% of the population and 2.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.80% are under the age of 18 and 4.20% are 65 or older.
