Wilkinson Heights is a town located in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,068.

Geography

Wilkinson Heights is located at 33°29'28" North, 80°50'2" West (33.491014, -80.833865)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). All of this area is land and none of it is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,068 people, 1,169 households, and 783 families residing in the town. The population density is 394.9/km² (1,022.6/mi²). There are 1,332 housing units at an average density of 171.4/km² (444.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 3.42% White, 95.66% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.39% from other races, and 0.16% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,169 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.3% are married couples living together, 30.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 26.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.21.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $22,065, and the median income for a family is $25,110. Males have a median income of $23,705 versus $20,194 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,360. 28.4% of the population and 24.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 30.2% are under the age of 18 and 21.6% are 65 or older.
