Wheatland, Pennsylvania

Wheatland is a borough located in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 748.

Wheatland was nearly destroyed in 1985 when a severe tornado struck the area. The tornado killed 18, injured over 300, and was easily the most powerful and damaging in Pennsylvania's history.


Wheatland is located at 41°12'1" North, 80°29'45" West (41.200389, -80.495709)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 748 people, 349 households, and 202 families residing in the borough. The population density is 328.2/km² (847.8/mi²). There are 379 housing units at an average density of 166.3/km² (429.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 85.96% White, 12.03% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 1.74% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 349 households out of which 17.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.5% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.1% are non-families. 38.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the borough the population is spread out with 18.3% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 27.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 85.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.9 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $27,596, and the median income for a family is $34,250. Males have a median income of $30,521 versus $18,409 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $15,365. 14.4% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.4% are under the age of 18 and 12.7% are 65 or older.
