West Babylon is a hamlet located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the hamlet had a total population of 43,452.

Geography

West Babylon is located at 40°42'48" North, 73°21'26" West (40.713399, -73.357106)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 20.8 km² (8.0 mi²). 20.0 km² (7.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.87% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 43,452 people, 14,268 households, and 10,943 families residing in the hamlet. The population density is 2,176.0/km² (5,638.8/mi²). There are 14,571 housing units at an average density of 729.7/km² (1,890.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the hamlet is 83.79% White, 10.32% African American, 0.12% Native American, 1.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.03% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 7.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,268 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% are non-families. 18.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.00 and the average family size is 3.42.

In the hamlet the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.2 males.
