\nWayne County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 21,216. Its county seat is Waynesboro6.

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,107 km² (814 mi²). 2,099 km² (810 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.


\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 21,216 people, 7,857 households, and 5,853 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 9,049 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 61.29% White, 38.01% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.33% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,857 households out of which 37.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 17.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.50% are non-families. 23.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.15. In the county the population is spread out with 29.20% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 91.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $25,918, and the median income for a family is $30,513. Males have a median income of $27,139 versus $16,680 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,757. 25.40% of the population and 21.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.70% are under the age of 18 and 21.90% are 65 or older.
