Waveland, Mississippi

Waveland is a city located in Hancock County, Mississippi, on the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,674. Waveland was the birthplace of jazz clarinetist Johnny Dodds.

census of 2000, there are 6,674 people, 2,731 households, and 1,783 families residing in the city. The population density is 378.4/km² (980.2/mi²). There are 3,442 housing units at an average density of 195.1/km² (505.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.38% White, 11.21% African American, 0.49% Native American, 1.50% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 2.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,731 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 14.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.01. In the city the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $33,304, and the median income for a family is $38,438. Males have a median income of $29,762 versus $21,694 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,413. 13.7% of the population and 11.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.6% are under the age of 18 and 11.7% are 65 or older.
