Vernon, Texas

Vernon is a city located in Wilbarger County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,660. It is the county seat of Wilbarger County6. \nVernon Texas was the birthplace of jazz trombonist Jack Teagarden and of Rock and Roll musician Roy Orbison.

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 11,660 people, 4,506 households, and 2,946 families residing in the city. The population density is 555.8/km² (1,439.2/mi²). There are 5,166 housing units at an average density of 246.2/km² (637.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 76.33% White, 9.65% African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 10.72% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. 22.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,506 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.07. In the city the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $28,194, and the median income for a family is $36,913. Males have a median income of $25,167 versus $18,971 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,747. 14.1% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.2% are under the age of 18 and 14.6% are 65 or older.
