US III Corps

The III Corps of the United States Army is one of the four corps organizations in the Army as of 2003. Nicknamed the "Phantom Corps" and "America's Hammer", and officially the counteroffensive force of the Army, it is currently headquartered at Fort Hood, Texas. Its major units are the 1st Cavalry Division and 4th Infantry Division.

The corps was first created 16 May 1918 in France, and participated in six campaigns. It was demobilized 9 September 1919 at Camp Sherman in Ohio.

It was reconstituted 27 June 1944, and fought through Europe, first in the Northern France Campaign, then the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. It was inactivated 10 October 1946.

It was active from 1951 to 1959, then reactivated permanently in 1961.
