Trigger finger

Trigger finger (or thumb) is the name of the condition when the sheath around a tendon becomes swollen and restricts movement of the tendon in the finger, making it painful to straighten after bent. It is a type of Stenosing Tenosynovitis.

The affected finger can make a soft crackling sound when moved.

This ailment is sometimes classed as a repetitive strain injury.
