Tiverton is a town located in Newport County, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 15,260.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.1 km² (36.3 mi²). 76.0 km² (29.4 mi²) of it is land and 18.0 km² (7.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.16% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 15,260 people, 6,077 households, and 4,405 families residing in the town. The population density is 200.7/km² (519.8/mi²). There are 6,474 housing units at an average density of 85.1 persons/km² (220.5 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.98% White, 0.43% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,077 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 27.5% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.95. In the town the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $49,977, and the median income for a family is $58,917. Males have a median income of $41,042 versus $29,217 for females.
