Tappahannock is a town located in Essex County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,068. It is the county seat of Essex County6.

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²). 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.99% water.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 2,068 people, 857 households, and 495 families residing in the town. The population density is 305.9/km² (793.6/mi²). There are 946 housing units at an average density of 139.9/km² (363.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 54.64% White, 41.59% African American, 0.10% Native American, 2.51% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 857 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.6% are married couples living together, 18.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% are non-families. 35.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.91. In the town the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 78.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.6 males.
