Sweetwater is a city located in Nolan County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,415. It is the county seat of Nolan County6.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 11,415 people, 4,545 households, and 3,017 families residing in the city. The population density is 439.9/km² (1,139.4/mi²). There are 5,202 housing units at an average density of 200.4/km² (519.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.29% White, 5.83% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 15.71% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. 31.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,545 households out of which 32.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.05. In the city the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $24,293, and the median income for a family is $29,953. Males have a median income of $27,722 versus $18,064 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,065. 23.7% of the population and 20.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.5% are under the age of 18 and 22.0% are 65 or older.
