Superior Township is a township located in Washtenaw County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 10,740.

Geography

\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 92.2 km² (35.6 mi²). 91.6 km² (35.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.65% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 10,740 people, 3,961 households, and 2,911 families residing in the township. The population density is 117.3/km² (303.7/mi²). There are 4,097 housing units at an average density of 44.7/km² (115.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 63.01% White, 30.81% African American, 0.47% Native American, 2.30% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,961 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% are married couples living together, 16.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% are non-families. 21.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.10. In the township the population is spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males. The median income for a household in the township is $56,622, and the median income for a family is $64,916. Males have a median income of $50,351 versus $35,417 for females. The per capita income for the township is $31,093. 9.6% of the population and 8.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.0% are under the age of 18 and 7.3% are 65 or older.
