Sugar Land has the headquarters for the Imperial Sugar company. Their main sugar factory once resided in this city, but it has been shut down. Because of the headquarters, this city is an economic force in the Houston Metropolitan Area.

The racial makeup of the city is 66.00% White, 5.20% African American, 0.24% Native American, 23.80% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.32% from other races, and 2.41% from two or more races. 7.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
