St. Matthews is a city located in Jefferson County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,852.

census of 2000, there are 15,852 people, 7,978 households, and 3,661 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,518.7/km² (3,938.3/mi²). There are 8,537 housing units at an average density of 817.9/km² (2,121.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.32% White, 4.95% African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.62% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 1.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,978 households out of which 19.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.9% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 54.1% are non-families. 45.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.94 and the average family size is 2.76. In the city the population is spread out with 17.0% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 35.6% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $42,219, and the median income for a family is $56,473. Males have a median income of $37,306 versus $31,163 for females. The per capita income for the city is $28,601. 6.7% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.8% are under the age of 18 and 5.4% are 65 or older.
