Spotswood is a borough located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 7,880. The ZIP code is 08884.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.83% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 7,880 people, 3,099 households, and 2,163 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,311.4/km² (3,389.8/mi²). There are 3,158 housing units at an average density of 525.6/km² (1,358.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 93.79% White, 1.55% African American, 0.08% Native American, 2.92% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 4.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,099 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the borough the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.9 males.
