Sparta is a city located in Hancock County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,522. The city is the county seat of Hancock County6.

census of 2000, there are 1,522 people, 617 households, and 385 families residing in the city. The population density is 322.9/km² (835.4/mi²). There are 725 housing units at an average density of 153.8/km² (397.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 15.37% White, 83.71% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 617 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 25.4% are married couples living together, 31.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 35.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.20. In the city the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older.
