Overview

South Africa's second non-racial general election was won by the African National Congress, who increased their number of seats 14. Notable was the collapse of the New National Party, previously the National Party, who without former president F.W. de Klerk lost more than half of their support. The liberal Democratic Party became the new official opposition, after being the 5th largest party in the 1994 election .
