Shippingport, Pennsylvania

Shippingport is a borough located in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 237.

Shippingport is famous for being the site of the United States's first commercial nuclear power plant, which began operation in 1957.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 9.4 km² (3.6 mi²). 8.5 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.89% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 237 people, 89 households, and 63 families residing in the borough. The population density is 27.9/km² (72.2/mi²). There are 95 housing units at an average density of 11.2/km² (29.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 89 households out of which 32.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.21.
