\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,371 km² (916 mi²). 2,367 km² (914 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 3,302 people, 1,300 households, and 941 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 1,613 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.22% White, 0.48% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.24% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 7.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,300 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.90% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.02. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.50 males.
