Secretary of State for Work and Pensions

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions is a position in the UK cabinet, responsible for the Department for Work and Pensions. It was created in 2001 from the merger of the Employment part of the Department for Education and Employment (before 1995 which was an independent Department for Employment, and the Department for Social Security. It is the successor to the latter, which itself represents a restoration of the short-lived Ministry of Social Security, which merged in 1968 to form the Department for Health and Social Security.
