Sebastian County, Arkansas

Sebastian County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 115,071. The county has two county seats, Greenwood and Fort Smith.

Sebastian County was formed on 6 January 1851 and was named for William King Sebastian, a United States Senator from Arkansas.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,414 km² (546 mi²). 1,389 km² (536 mi²) of it is land and 25 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 115,071 people, 45,300 households, and 30,713 families residing in the county. The population density is 83/km² (215/mi²). There are 49,311 housing units at an average density of 36/km² (92/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.34% White, 6.16% Black or African American, 1.57% Native American, 3.51% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.71% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. 6.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 45,300 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.40% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.20% are non-families. 27.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 29.50% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,889, and the median income for a family is $41,303. Males have a median income of $30,056 versus $22,191 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,424. 13.60% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.60% are under the age of 18 and 10.00% are 65 or older.
