Sandy, Oregon

Sandy is a city located in Clackamas County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,385.

Geography

Sandy is located at 45°23'51" North, 122°15'59" West (45.397499, -122.266319)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²). 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,385 people, 1,956 households, and 1,431 families residing in the city. The population density is 790.6/km² (2,044.9/mi²). There are 2,080 housing units at an average density of 305.4/km² (789.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.91% White, 0.15% African American, 1.15% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 1.65% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 4.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,956 households out of which 42.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $42,115, and the median income for a family is $52,543. Males have a median income of $41,141 versus $25,604 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,138. 8.1% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.4% are under the age of 18 and 5.2% are 65 or older.

Transportation

United States Highway 26 runs through the middle of Sandy, forming downtown Sandy's Pioneer and Proctor Bouldevards. Much of the highway traffic in Sandy is comprised of travelers on their way to Mount Hood or points beyond. In addition, Sandy serves as the northern terminus of Oregon Highway 211.

Sandy operates its own mass transit system called the Sandy Area Metro (SAM).
