San Juan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 558. The county seat is Silverton.

Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,006 km² (388 mi²). 1,003 km² (387 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 558 people, 269 households, and 157 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (1/mi²). There are 632 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.13% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 0.72% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.36% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 7.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 269 households out of which 23.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.90% are married couples living together, 8.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.30% are non-families. 36.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.63. In the county the population is spread out with 20.10% under the age of 18, 4.30% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 40.50% from 45 to 64, and 7.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 110.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 112.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $30,764, and the median income for a family is $40,000. Males have a median income of $30,588 versus $19,545 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,584. 20.90% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.40% are under the age of 18 and 7.10% are 65 or older.
