Salisbury is a city located in Rowan County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,462. It is the county seat of Rowan County6.

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 26,462 people, 10,276 households, and 6,186 families residing in the city. The population density is 574.6/km² (1,488.3/mi²). There are 11,288 housing units at an average density of 245.1/km² (634.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 57.30% White, 37.56% African American, 0.28% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.92% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 4.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 10,276 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.0% are married couples living together, 17.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.8% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.92. In the city the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,923, and the median income for a family is $41,108. Males have a median income of $31,149 versus $25,019 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,864. 16.0% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.3% are under the age of 18 and 11.0% are 65 or older.
