Rutland (town), Massachusetts

Rutland is a town located in Worcester County, Massachusetts at the geographical center of the state. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,353. Worcester County's only buffalo herd is located in Rutland, at Alta Vista Farm.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.3 km² (36.4 mi²). 91.3 km² (35.3 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.16% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,353 people, 2,253 households, and 1,694 families residing in the town. The population density is 69.6/km² (180.2/mi²). There are 2,392 housing units at an average density of 26.2 persons/km² (67.8 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.58% White, 1.04% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,253 households out of which 42.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.1% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 24.8% are non-families. 19.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.21.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $62,846, and the median income for a family is $70,689. Males have a median income of $45,824 versus $35,390 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,311. 3.3% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.0% are under the age of 18 and 7.3% are 65 or older.
