Rockingham County, North Carolina

Rockingham County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 91,928. Its county seat is Wentworth6.

History

The county was formed in 1785 from Guilford County. It was named for Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1765 to 1766 and again in 1782.

Geography

According to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,482 km² (572 mi²). 1,467 km² (566 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.03% water.

The county is divided into eleven townships: Huntsville, Leaksville, Madison, Mayo, New Bethel, Price, Reidsville, Ruffin, Simpsonville, Wentworth, and Williamsburg.

As of the
census2 of 2000, there are 91,928 people, 36,989 households, and 26,188 families residing in the county. The population density is 63/km² (162/mi²). There are 40,208 housing units at an average density of 27/km² (71/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.33% White, 19.57% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.69% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 3.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 36,989 households out of which 30.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.60% are married couples living together, 12.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,784, and the median income for a family is $40,821. Males have a median income of $30,479 versus $22,437 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,120. 12.80% of the population and 10.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.30% are under the age of 18 and 15.50% are 65 or older.
